It all began when I bought a small white  somoothed haired Podengo called “Amendoim da Praia do Ribatejo” for the purpose of becoming my pet. When I came to know more about this breed I fell in love with it. Afterwards, I met some other breeders and Podengo lovers, and I understood that the Portuguese Podengo world had strong friendship ties, support, and a common goal: to preserve this primitive hunting beautiful dog. 

My name is Jorge Humberto Nogueira and I have bred Small Portuguese Podengo Smooth-haired since 1999 from the best available Portuguese lines. “Vedras” is a familiar amateur breeder in Torres Vedras, a small town near Lisbon in Portugal. Our work goal is building a quality line for exhibit, breeding, and pet. Besides healthy and physical aspects we care for socialization also. The word “Vedras” came from my city name, meaning “Antique” in Latin. "VEDRAS" kennel name is recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club and the Federation Cynologique Internationale, FCI.

We search for quality, and work hard to defending and improving this original breed from Portugal, that represent an important Portuguese patrimony and a part of our identity. The Small Portuguese Podengo is not just a hard worker in guarding and hunting, he can also be a very intelligent friend and an excellent pet.

The advantage is that this dog results from a natural selection, and not from human intervention or genetic manipulation. It is a primitive strong and independent dog. It is a rare breed that began to be discovered in some European countries and the USA.
